Why Vinyl Mastering Is Different
Streaming platforms normalize loudness, so making a master louder gains nothing. Vinyl does the opposite: it has no normalization and hard physical limits, so an over-loud, brickwalled master actively fails. A cutting lathe traces your waveform into a physical groove, and a stylus has to track that groove without skipping, distorting, or overheating the cutter head. That means a vinyl master is defined by what you leave out — the headroom and dynamics an all-out digital master throws away.
The vinyl-safe target here — around -12 LUFS integrated with generous true-peak headroom — is not about being quiet. It is about handing the mastering (and, ultimately, the cutting) engineer a signal with room to breathe, so the cut stays clean and hot without fighting the medium.
The Physical Constraints That Shape a Vinyl Master
- Mono-anchored bass. Out-of-phase low frequencies make the groove jump vertically and can throw the stylus out. Summing lows below roughly 120–150 Hz to mono keeps the cut stable and the bass solid.
- Controlled sibilance and highs. A stylus struggles to trace fast, high-energy high-frequency content; harsh "S" sounds and cymbal splash can distort on playback. Surgical de-essing and a controlled top end prevent that.
- Preserved dynamics, no brickwall. Transients that survive keep the cut lively; a slammed limiter both wastes the medium's strength and increases tracing distortion.
- Side length vs. level. The longer a side, the tighter the grooves and the lower the safe cutting level — so program level and running order matter to how loud a side can be cut.

Avoiding Common Vinyl Mastering Mistakes
- Do not send your loud streaming master to the plant. A -8 LUFS brickwalled file cuts with distortion and tracing problems.
- Do not leave wide stereo bass. Sum the lows to mono or risk skips and an unstable cut.
- Do not ignore sibilance. What sounds sharp on headphones can spit on a needle — control it before the cut.
- Do not cram a long program onto one side. Split sides sensibly so each can be cut at a healthy level.
